Where are the bums on seats?

“Lets tell a tale of a city in pictures – for they are worth so many words”

Louise Bloomfield, Chairman of Confederation Greater Hobart Business Ltd was astounded to see that on such a gorgeous and warm spring day that yet again no pedestrian life in Midtown Elizabeth Street.

“The plants are either dead or dying in their planter boxes and the seats themselves appear to not be holding up that well to what use they do get”.

It’s12:40pm with a delightful 26C of Spring air and all the seating and ‘sticky’ areas are empty.  By contrast it’s flat chat over at Room for a Pony.

“Time and again the local small businesses have stated that the parklets don’t work.  Parklets simply do not support local small business and in fact ensure that the disabled in our community lose access to goods and services that they would have otherwise enjoyed.”  said Louise Bloomfield.

“Failing to support small businesses in areas such as North Hobart, Sandy Bay and now even the Midtown areas will force a journey towards job losses, poor credit and ultimately business closures as the customers find themselves unable to engage with the businesses and go elsewhere.”

If the Hobart City Council Alderman read earlier consultative reports they themselves funded on the area, they would remember that the community values their local small businesses over and above larger National counterparts – for they contribute so much culture and local flavour to the areas.  We need to be sure that the functional environment allows them to continue operating as a priority.

“Let’s hope the Hobart City Council budgets for removal of the Parklets as soon as practical. We need the car spaces!”
